Our unique Korean classes

At Kia Ora Korean Class Wellington, we offer tailored programmes designed to make learning Korean engaging and effective. Find the perfect fit for your journey, whether you're a complete beginner or looking to advance your skills.

Beginner: Hangul foundation

Perfect for those with zero knowledge. Master basic Hangul, compound consonants, and vowels to build words. Strong foundation for faster learning.

Elementary: Survival Korean

Build your "survival toolkit" for daily life. Learn basic expressions, greetings, purchasing items, and ordering food with an 800-word vocabulary.

Intermediate: Social fluency

Move beyond basics to social and public interactions. Understand nuance, correct word usage, and fundamental characteristics of Korean language. Placement test required.

Personalised learning: Private & semi-private lessons

For tailored instruction at your own pace, our private and semi-private lessons offer maximum flexibility, available face-to-face or online. Perfect for specific goals like TOPIK exam preparation or a fast-tracked learning experience.

Your journey: From 'I can read it' to 'Social fluency'

After the Beginner (Hangul) Course, you'll enter the "I Can Read It" phase, able to read any Korean text. The Elementary Course leads to the "Survival" phase, where you can confidently order food, introduce yourself, and handle basic daily errands using your 800-word vocabulary. With the Intermediate Course, you'll reach the "Social" phase, moving to natural conversations, explaining feelings, telling stories, and handling complex transactions like opening a bank account.

Who will thrive in our classes?

Our classes are most rewarding for the "K-Culture" Enthusiast who wants to move beyond subtitles, the "Self-Taught" Plateauer seeking to fix bad habits, the "Future Traveler or Expat" needing practical "Survival" Korean, the "Career-Minded Professional" aiming for TOPIK or workplace fluency, and "Social Butterflies" who enjoy learning in a small, interactive group setting.

Common questions about learning Korean

Before you embark on your Korean language journey, find answers to the questions people often ask about our classes and learning Korean.

"Is Korean hard to learn if I only speak English?"

While Korean grammar differs from English, Hangul, its writing system, is highly logical. Most students are surprised by how quickly they can learn to read the alphabet in our Beginner course, making the grammar feel much more manageable.

"Should I take private or group lessons?"

Choose group classes if you enjoy social interaction, learning from others, and a fixed, affordable schedule. Choose private lessons if you have a busy, irregular schedule, or a specific goal like a job interview or TOPIK exam requiring dedicated focus.

"Do I really need to learn Hangul first? Can't I just use romanised letters?"

Yes, you really need it! Romanisation (writing Korean words with the English alphabet) is a trap that often leads to poor pronunciation. Learning Hangul first, as we recommend, is the "secret shortcut" to sounding more like a native speaker.

"I’ve tried apps before and failed. How is this different?"

Apps are great for vocabulary, but they can't correct your pronunciation or explain social nuances. Our classes offer engaging activities and real-time feedback in small groups, ensuring you're actively speaking and receiving immediate human corrections.

"What happens if I miss a session?"

Since our courses run for 8 weeks, we understand that life happens. We can often provide materials or catch-up guidance, leveraging our online options to help you stay on track.
